Gel permeation chromatography (GPC) was used to separate the components of an acid concentrate. This concentrate was prepared from the 400 to 500/sup 0/C distillate of Wilmington (Calif.) petroleum. The separation was made with a cross-linked polystyrene gel, using methylene chloride as a solvent; and the fractions obtained were characterized by infrared spectra and by molecular weight data. A carboxylic acid fraction obtained was essentially free of phenolic and nitrogen-containing compounds. Results indicate that molecular association of some compound types is responsible for the separation.
