The high efficiency for ion collection and retention after collisional dissociation makes the ion trap mass spectrometer very effective for tandem mass spectroscopy of molecular species. We are studying the application of the ion trap together with laser ablation/desorption to the analysis of individual aerosol particles. Experiments with levitated microparticles and direct sampling of airborne particles will be described.
