In this laboratory, the authors are undertaking systematic investigations on new inorganic ion-exchange membranes of insoluble acid salts of tetravalent metals. Here, the authors are reporting the preparations of flexible pellicles (thin films) of zirconium phosphate-phosphite and hafnium phosphate-phosphite, Zr (HPO{sub 4}){sub 0.7} (HPO{sub 3}){sub 1.3}.nH{sub 2}O and Hf(HPO{sub 4}){sub 0.7} (HPO{sub 3}){sub 1.3}.nH{sub 2}O, respectively (where n = 0.5-1.0), by a process of intercalation-deintercalation of propylamine or butylamine (at low and full load of the amine) in crystalline M(HPO{sub 4}){sub 0.7}(HPO{sub 3}){sub 1.3}. 0.5H{sub 2}O,(MPP); (where M=Zr or Hf), in aqueous solution followed by filtration on a porous plastic filter.
