Preparation of a stainless steel/zirconia composite membrane and surface modifications by PECVD
- Ecole Nationale Superieure de Chimie, Montpellier (France); and others
The geometry for inorganic membranes is mainly based on tubular or multichannel porous supports. A flat formable and flexible geometry is also of interest for inorganic membranes in view of membrane plants with less space consuming and more energy saving compared with tubular membranes. Here the authors present the preparation of a flat composite membrane made of stainless steel porous support with different ceramic layers (zirconia, silica) coated on the surface of this substrate. The support commercialized by Bekaert is made of stainless steel or other corrosion or heat resistant sintered fibers with pore diameters in the micron range (microfiltration). The supported ceramic membranes obtained with this support are active in ultrafiltration. Surface modification of these membranes has been carried out using PECVD in order to obtain a tailored hydrophilic/hydrophobic surface balance.
