This talk explores the role that U(1) (or some discrete) R-symmetries can play in the construction of realistic supersymmetric models. By exploiting U(1){sub R}, the first part attempts to obtain a more robust version of MSSM in which neutrinos are massive and the resolution of the {mu} and strong CP problems is intimately related. The second part goes beyond the MSSM gauge group by considering SU(3){sub c}xSU(2){sub L}xSU(2){sub R}xU(1){sub B-L}, supplemented by U(1){sub R}. The parameter tan {beta}{approx_equal}m{sub t}/m{sub b}, which allows one to predict the top quark mass in the right ball park, and also explain why the 'standard model' higgs h deg. has so far not been found at LEPII. Its tree level mass is M{sub Zo} and, after radiative corrections, one expects m{sub ho} {approx}110{+-}10 GeV. This particular scheme also resolves the {mu} problem of MSSM and enables one to realize an inflationary epoch with the spectral index of density fluctuations very close to unity (n{approx_equal}0.98)
