Resonant laser ionization of mercury via core-excited autoionizing states

Even-parity autoionizing states of atomic mercury have been excited using three Nd:YAG pumped, pulsed tunable lasers and one intermediate decay. Most of the observed resonances have linewidths of several wavenumbers down to a few GHz. They are identified as members of the 5d{sup 9}6s{sup 2}ns,nd configurations. A tentative assignment of J values of multiplet states is given.
