SPECTRAL STRUCTURE OF NEUTRAL AND IONIZED OSMIUM

Journal Article · · Physica

An analysis of the Os I and Os II spectra is reponted. Of a total number of 263 Os I levels 155 can be intsrpreted in terms of the quantum theory. The ground level system is associated with the electron configurations 5d/sup 6/ 6s/sup 2/ and 5d/sup 7/6s, which are strongly intermingled. Of the 5d/sup 8/- configuration, however, no trace has been found. In the odd system most levels can be assigned to multiplets of the confignrations 5d/sup 6/6s6p, 5d/sup 5/6s/ sup 2/6p and 5d/sup 7/6p. Many of the high even states are attributed to the configurations 5d/sup 6/6s7s, 5d/sup 5/6s/sup 2/7s and 5d/sup 6/6s6d. The number of classified Os I lines is about 40% of the total number known. For the ionization potential of the Os-atom a value of (8.5 plus or minus 0.1) v is found. The main progress in the analysis of Os II is the definite establishment of 5d/sup 5/6s/sup 2/ S 5/2 and the identification of 5d/sup 5/6s(/sup 7/S)6p / sup 8/P /sub 9/2/,/sub 7/2/,/sub 5/ >i/sub /2/. Approximately 15% of all known Os II lines above 2000 A are classified. Energy levels of Os I and Os II with observed J- and gvalues and quantum assignments are presented. (auth)
