The development of new materials and new chemicals based on C{sub 60} and other fullerenes is currently an area of intense study. In particular, a large effort has been focused on the production of fullerene derivatives through C-C bond formations. Here, the authors demonstrate that the derivatization of C{sub 60} can be catalyzed by a metal center through two potential routes-reactions of metallated C{sub 60} ions with molecules and reactions of metal-ligated ions with C{sub 60}.
