Ion trap mass spectrometry: Variations in electrode size and RF drive frequency
- Los Alamos National Lab., NM (United States)
The use of smaller electrodes, reduced RF drive frequencies, resonance ion ejection, and nonlinear resonance ion ejection have all been used to increase the 650 amu mass/charge range of the standard Finnigan ion trap mass spectrometer. However, some of these techniques may have detrimental effects on other operational characteristics of the ITMS. Previous work has shown that mass resolution is dependent on ion density and electrode geometry. Two sets of electrodes that are 0.8 (r{sub 0} = 0.8 cm, z{sub 0} = 0.566 cm) and 1.4 (r{sub 0}= 1.40 cm, z{sub 0}=0.990 cm) scale versions of the Finnigan electrodes (r{sub 0}=1.0 cm, z{sub 0}=0.707 cm) have been machined at LANL in order to investigate the effect of size and RF drive frequency (900kHz-1.25MHz) on mass resolution and relative sensitivity. Comparisons of electrode geometries with endcap spacing for the specific cases of r{sub 0}{sup 2}=2z{sub 0}{sup 2} and for a geometry stretched 10.7% in z have also been completed.
