The requirement that all reformulated gasoline (RFG) sold in the United States be analyzed by GC/MS for aromatic content presents a unique challenge and opportunity for petroleum mass spectrometry. A brief overview will be presented on the specifics of the method and the current regulatory requirements it entails. Details of the proposed ASTM implementation of this method will be examined from a mass spectrometry point of view, with emphasis on accuracy and precision considerations as well as the challenges presented by moving this technique into a refinery setting.
