Reformulated gasoline (RFG) is a new product offered in the United States since January 1, 1995 in an effort by the EPA to meet the Clean Air Act. RFG is a highly-designed product with tight specifications for aromatics, benzene, oxygenate content, distillation properties, sulfur content, toxics content, and vapor pressure. Because of all the new regulatory requirements on this product, a number of new analytical techniques have been specified for its analysis, including GC/MS for total aromatics. Data from the EPA and proposed ASTM methods for RFG analysis are presented, along with data suggesting a number of extensions and improvements on these methods. The accuracy and precision of these methods are evaluated.
