Vapor phase adsorption equilibrium of carbon tetrachloride on dry soils was studied at 288, 293, and 298 K. The adsorption and desorption isotherm data were measured gravimetrically. In order to examine the influence of soil properties, two representative soil samples obtained from Times-Beach-Missouri and Visalia-California were used as adsorbents. Experimental data were correlated using three different models; results of the BED and GAB models are presented. The adsorption isotherms of carbon tetrachloride on the two soils were qualitatively similar, but the equilibrium uptakes were different at the same equilibrium pressure, particularly in the monolayer region. This can be attributed to the differences in specific surface area, pore diameter, and clay content of the soils. Isosteric heat of adsorption derived from experimental data implied that the soil samples have energetically hetergeneous surfaces. Furthermore, the heats of adsorption are of the same order of magnitude as the heat of condensation of the adsorbate, confirming that carbon tetrachloride vapor adosption on soils is primarily physical adsorption. In the monolayer region, the Missouri bound the adsorbate much stronger than the California soils. This is primarily due to its higher clay content and indicates higher energy requirements for decontamination.
