Physical Processes in Compensated Beams of Negative Ions and Problems of Transport of the Beams

In this proceeding the review of results of theoretical and experimental researches of physical processes in compensated beams of negative ions is presented. Analogous review has been done by one of the authors. The present proceeding is completed with the new results of numerical calculation of electric fields in stationary steady beam of negative ions, and the results of experimental studies of ion-ion instability stabilization at low gas pressure. As well, the review includes three main issues of the physics of compensated beams:1) Space charge compensation of the stationary steady beam; 2) Dynamic decompensation of the beam space charge occurring in result of the beam current modulation due to plasma instabilities in the ion source; 3) Collective processes.Results presented in the review enable estimation of the influence of non-compensated space charge, nonresonant oscillations of the beam current and collective oscillations of the ion-beam plasma on transport properties of the beam, as well as choosing optimum conditions for its transport.
