Aerodynamic development of advanced steam turbine blades

Conference ·
OSTI ID:207808

Advanced turbine nozzles and moving blades for high pressure (HP) / intermediate pressure (IP) steam turbine stages have been developed which provide optimized flow patterns through a stage and reduced secondary flow losses, expanding the technology of formerly developed lean nozzles. Two types of new stages were numerically and experimentally investigated, and proven to have an efficiency gain of 1--2% compared with a conventional stage. Applying this concept to low pressure (LP) stages, advanced flow pattern stages for last stages have been designed and their effectiveness was precisely studied in the LP section. A contoured endwall nozzle for HP/IP stages was also developed as a means of reducing the secondary flow losses in stages with a low aspect ratio, and the benefit in stage efficiency was verified through a model turbine testing.
