Physical and chemical properties of (Y{sub 1-x}Ca{sub x})(Ba{sub 2-x}La{sub x})Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7-{delta}}

The metallic conductivity of both the CuO{sub 2} sheets and the CuO{sub x} chains of YBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7{minus}{delta}} has been established. The authors have used double doping in (Y{sub 1{minus}x}Ca{sub x})(Ba{sub 2{minus}x}La{sub x})Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7{minus}{delta}} to destroy the integrity of the CuO{sub 1{minus}{delta}} chains while keeping constant the total oxidation state of the Cu-O array. A break-up of the chain segments allows the authors to establish the temperature dependence of the Seebeck coefficient, {alpha}(T), due to the CuO{sub 2} sheets and, by difference, that of the CuO{sub 1-{minus}{delta}} chains in YBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7{minus}{delta}}. The authors also show that double doping enhances significantly the chemical stability of the superconductive phase. The origin of the chemical stability and of the behavior of {alpha}(T) is interpreted.
