Multiphase pumps and Deepstar
Deepwater production may require pressure boosting for remote satellite wellheads. One solution is the use of multiphase pumps. The main advantage of that approach is the apparent simplicity of redundant, relatively large units serving multiple wells and the improved reliability that may provide. At this time, that benefit is beginning to be quantified by actual reliability data from field installations. Deepstar, a group of 18 oil and gas companies and 44 vendor companies developing technology for oil production from the deepwater Gulf of Mexico, has considered transporting the unprocessed multiphase flow to a platform located 50 miles from the wellheads of two deepwater fields. Of the three reservoirs evaluated by Deepstar, only two characterized by a medium and low gas/oil ratio (GOR) required pressure boosting. As each well`s pressure is depleted and water cut increases with time, individual wells will require pressure boosting.
