A mass balance approach to multimedia analysis

Journal Article · · Pollution Engineering
OSTI ID:201162
A multimedia approach to examining pollutants in a facility focuses on overall methods for accounting for pollutants and dealing with them, as opposed to examining each phase or medium independently. The need to use a multimedia approach increasingly is being recognized by owners and operators of industrial facilities because it is more cost-effective than examining a particular medium without considering its effects on other media. As a case in point, it is not uncommon for engineers and managers to implement a mass-transfer method to remove a pollutant from a specific waste stream or phase in order to comply with a given regulation, only to incur increased treatment costs as a result of the pollutant residing in the receiving phase. A major purpose of this column is to encourage new methods of facility operation that will not result in crossmedia transfer of pollutants.
