Scale-up of coal liquefaction reactor of NEDOL process
The coal liquefaction pilot plant of NEDOL process supported by New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) was successfully operated during five operational periods, a total two hundred sixty nine days in Kashima, Japan. The reactor system of the pilot plant consisted of three bubble column slurry reactors one meter in diameter connected in series, and processing 150 ton of coal per day. Engineering data on the reactors as well as gas holdup were obtained through the stable operations. The reaction simulator with thirteen reaction paths was developed for the NEDOL process to estimate oil and gas yields and was verified with the operational data of the pilot plant. In addition, the axial dispersion models for reactant and heat was applied to the reactor system of the pilot plant. The model with quench gas injection was validated based on feed temperatures, axial temperature profiles, coal conversions, and hydrogen consumption. The heat of reaction estimated from the heat balance between the inlet and outlet streams in each reactor and the second order kinetics respect to the reactant concentration were applied to the simulation. The axial dispersion coefficient estimated by the model simulation was smaller than the values reported in the previous works under high pressures. Scale-up of reactors is facilitated by the above two simulators validated by the operational data of the pilot plant. The required volume of the reactors to satisfy expected oil yields is estimated by the reaction simulator. The design for the reactors of a 4-meter diameter is supported by the model study estimating temperature profiles, feed temperature, quench locations, and required amounts of quench gas.
