Overview of the 150 t/d NEDOL coal liquefaction pilot plant project
Coal liquefaction is one of its major concerns and NEDO has been promoting the NEDOL process for bituminous and sub-bituminous coal liquefaction. The NEDOL process was realized in the 1 t/d process supporting unit (PSU) based on research and development work through autoclaves, bench scale plants and PDU scale plants. In the PSU, comprehensive experiments have been conducted with several kinds of coals under various operating conditions and lots of significant data have been acquired. In parallel with the research and development in the PSU, the 150 t/d pilot plant (PP) was constructed in Kashima City, Ibaraki Prefecture for collecting scale-up data. Construction was completed on July 1996 and after some trial operations, the first comprehensive operation was conducted on March 1997. In July, 1,012 consecutive hour coal-in-operation was achieved in the second run, followed by 1,920 hour operation in the third run (Oct. 1997--Jan. 1998). The main objectives of this pilot plant project are to ensure high oil yield and long term consecutive operability, and to obtain overall engineering data including scale up method for designing a commercial plant. In this report, summary of the results of the PP operation and supporting research are presented and common technologies reflected to the Pilot Plant are briefly introduced.
