Oxidation behavior of a sputtered Ni-5Cr-5Al nanocrystalline coating

Journal Article · · Oxidation of Metals
A NiO-forming Ni-5Cr-5Al (at.%) alloy has been developed and deposited as a sputtered nanocrystalline coating. The oxide formation and oxidation behavior of this coating have been studied at 1,000 C in air. The oxidation rate markedly decreased with time and the oxidation kinetics obeyed the fourth power law. Complex oxide scales, consisting of NiO, NiAl{sub 2}O{sub 4} and {alpha}-Al{sub 2}O{sub 3}, were formed during 200 hr oxidation. The outer oxide layer consisted of NiO and NiAl{sub 2}O{sub 4} and an inner oxide layer of {alpha}-Al{sub 2}O{sub 3}. The sputtered Ni-5Cr-5Al nanocrystalline coating showed good oxidation resistance due to the formation of an {alpha}-Al{sub 2}O{sub 3} inner layer and excellent adhesion of the complex oxide scales.
