Phase analysis of two steel work rolls using Moessbauer spectroscopy

Journal Article · · Metallurgical and Materials Transactions. A, Physical Metallurgy and Materials Science
Responding to an increasing demand lately in the hot rolling process to produce rolled steel plates with homogeneous thickness and even surface and to improve the productivity, continuous studies on developing rolls with enhanced properties in wear resistance, strength, fracture toughness, and thermal fatigue have been made. Because rolls are cast in large sizes and cannot go through a subsequent hot deformation process, the cost structure composed of coarse carbides is retained, and the matrix alone is transformed into tempered martensite by austenitization and tempering treatments. Heat-treated rolls are affected by various factors such as chemical composition, casting conditions, and heat-treatment condition, and thus have a complex structure with many phases such as carbides, tempered martensite, austenite, pearlite, and graphite. Although most coarse carbides are not influenced by heat treatment, retained austenite formed after austenitization seriously deteriorates hardness and wear resistance. Therefore, it is required to carefully analyze the microstructural changes varying with the casting and heat-treatment conditions, together with particular emphasis on the elimination of austenite after heat treatment.
