Vaporization studies of lanthanum trichloride, tribromide, and triiodide

The total vapor pressures of the lanthanum trihalides LaCl{sub 3}, LaBr{sub 3}, and LaI{sub 3} were measured by the torsion method, and their temperature dependence can be expressed by the following selected equations in the covered temperature ranges: LaCl{sub 3}(s): log(p/kPa) = (12.31 {+-} 0.10) {minus} (17,012 {+-} 100) K/T (1,006--1,122 K). LaCl{sub 3}(1): log(p/kPa) = (9.65 {+-} 0.23) {minus} (13,989 {+-} 272) K/T (1,137--1,188 K). LaBr{sub 3}(s): log(p/kPa) = (11.71 {+-} 0.20) {minus} (15,392 {+-} 150) K/T (955--1,045 K). LaI{sub 3}(s): log(p/kPa) = (11.10 {+-} 0.20) {minus} (14,098 {+-} 200) K/T (932--1,038 K). LaI{sub 3}(1): log(p/kPa) = (8.39 {+-} 0.15) {minus} (11,306 {+-} 200) K/T (1,055--1,123 K). Treating by second- and third-law methods the obtained results, the standard sublimation enthalpies, {Delta}{sub sub}H{degree}(298 K) = 334 {+-} 5, 308 {+-} 5, and 285 {+-} 3 kJ/mol for LaCl{sub 3}, LaBr{sub 3}, and LaI{sub 3}, respectively, were determined.
