Creep behavior of an Al-7005 alloy reinforced with alumina particulates

Conference ·
OSTI ID:20014195
Creep tests were conducted over a temperature range from 573 to 673 K on an Al-7005 matrix alloy reinforced with 10 volume % of Al{sub 2}O{sub 3} particulates. The experimental results cover almost six orders of magnitude of strain rate and they give both a high value for the apparent activation energy for creep and an apparent stress exponent which is essentially constant and independent of the testing temperature. The creep behavior is compared with earlier results reported for an Al-7005 alloy reinforced with 20 volume % of Al{sub 2}O{sub 3} particulates. The results indicate similarities in creep flow between these two composites at the fastest experimental strain rates, but at the slower rates, typically below {approximately}10{sup {minus}4} s{sup {minus}1}, there is a higher creep resistance in the composite reinforced with 20 volume % of Al{sub 2}O{sub 3} because of the presence of a well-defined threshold stress.
