A diagnostic assessment of the UAM-V photochemical model with two meteorological drivers: RAMS 3b versus MM5

Preliminary results from a study aimed at examining the sensitivity of the prediction from the Urban Airshed Model (UAM-V) to differing meteorological inputs are presented. Two meteorological models, the Regional Atmospheric modeling System (RAMS version 3b) and the Penn State-NCAR Mesoscale model, Version 5 (MM5) are used to obtain the meteorological inputs to the air quality model. The period of interest is the summer of 1995, with particular emphasis on the ozone episode covering the period (July 10--July 16). Statistical analyses are conducted to assess the performance of the model predictions from the two cases against observations. It is seen that the differing input meteorological fields lead to different responses in the predictions of ozone. While the model predictions with the two different meteorological drivers are within the EPA stipulated error range, the differences in the modeled values are important to understand in order to identify the physical processes that affect the behavior of the photochemical model. Additionally, this ongoing work also aims at studying the spatial variation in the response to the differing input meteorological fields. Selected results from case studies of individual sites are also presented. Further analyses are in progress.
