Science policy issues addressed by the current US Congress will be discussed. Regulatory reform legislation focused on the use of risk assessment and cost-benefit analysis to improve the regulatory process. Issues such as: defining sound science, the use of a prescriptive process for risk assessment, judicial review of scientific judgment and parameter selection, peer review, and the use of comparative risk assessment were part of the legislative debate. The status of this legislation will be discussed along with its impact on scientists and the regulatory process. Current science issues in environmental legislation, such as Superfund and the Clean Water Act, will also be presented.
