Studies of superplastic (SP) deformation in materials with different types of microstructure, i.e., micro-duplex, quasi-single phase, and layered microstructure, in which SP-layer(s) were sandwiched between non-SP regions showed sliding of grain groups. This cooperative grain boundary sliding (CGBS) phenomenon has been studied at different microstructural scales. A computer aided geometrical analysis of CGBS has been developed. Different combinations of the operation of CGBS surfaces have been modeled. A pattern of shear surfaces, observed experimentally, can be produced assuming double shear at CGBS surfaces.
