ADSMP`s annual report of the DSM industry - 1994
All the current debates about retail wheeling. competition, downsizing, and downward pressure on utility rates involve discussions of the future of utility demand-side management programs. Questions such as, {open_quotes}can DSM survive in a competitive environments{close_quotes} are frequently raised. The Association of DSM Professionals (ADSMP) believes the answer to this question is a resounding {open_quotes}yes{close_quotes}. We are convinced the most successful utilities in the future will be those who work with their customers, listen to their customers needs, and market programs and services that meet those needs. These are the attributes of successful demand-side management programs. The skills and knowledge of the DSM professional will never be more important to the success of the utility than at the present time. We also believe that the term demand-side management has become, in the minds of many, too restrictive. Too often, it is used to mean {open_quotes}conservation{close_quotes} rather than the broader definition favored by DSM professionals of {open_quotes}the entire range of activities that influence end-use customers use of electricity and/or natural gas in order to change the patterns and magnitude of a utility`s load and produce svstem and customer savings{close_quotes}. Because of this, ADSMP is considering a name change to include the term {open_quotes}marketing{close_quotes} in its name. ADSMP`s Annual Report of the DSM Industry was started in the year 1993, and continues for the year 1994. It represents the most comprehensive compilation of key facts and figures about DSM from the latest and most reliable published sources, including the American Gas Association. American Public Power Association, Edison Electric Institute. Electric Power Research Institute. Gas Research Institute, National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners, and die U.S. Department of Energy.
