A field experiment to evaluate the practical benefits of the utility communications architecture for gas utility applications

Conference ·
OSTI ID:192210
The Utility Communications Architecture (UCA) has the potential to provide a unifying set of communication standards to establish long term and (ultimately) cost effective solutions to the automation and data communication challenges facing the gas utility industry. While the current UCA specification attempts to be universally applicable to the {open_quotes}utility industry{close_quotes}, there has been little or no input related to the automation and data communication needs of the gas utility industry. EnergyLine Systems and Pacific Gas & Electric Company, under contract to the Gas Research Institute, plans to conduct a gas UCA field experiment in the first quarter of 1995 to test the concepts of UCA in a real gas utility environment. The primary objective of the gas UCA field experiment is to gather sufficient operational data and experience to evaluate the practical and cost benefits of UCA for gas utility applications. In addition, the experience gained by applying UCA in a gas utility environment will provide valuable gas utility industry input to the ongoing development of the UCA specification.
