Within the gas utility industry, many new challenges and opportunities have been identified. Among these, one of the most significant is gas utility industry restructuring, which includes deregulation, transportation, and competition. Utility operations are becoming ever more complex to meet these challenges and opportunities of the future. In addition, customers are becoming more technologically sophisticated and expect similar sophistication from utilities. Automation and information are key to address these challenges. Utilities are instituting automation technologies to improve service reliability, increase operating efficiency and improve asset utilization of the system from the gas transmission line, to the gas distribution pressure regulator station, through to the customer`s meter, and into the customer`s premise. These new technologies are also being positioned to provide value added services to the customer. These new technologies, along with existing systems, will satisfy the requirements for real-time, near real-time and historical operating information for gas utility operations. In many cases, the same information is required by multiple users and utilized for different applications. Applications and data acquisition should be transparent to multiple end users and independent of the communication media. Therefore, advancements in data processing and communications systems must be effectively integrated into the business structure to optimize the operational performance and management of a utility today. Utility Communications Architecture (UCA) can provide a set of guidelines to establish a long term solution for the gas utility industry.
