EnerLink presentation to DA/DSM 95
I would like to thank you for inviting me to speak at this session today. I am here today representing EnterLink Information Services, an unregulated business of The Southern Company. What we will be describing and demonstrating for you today is an innovative application of technology, specifically a software solution, that has significant potential to impact your strategies related to customer satisfaction and retention in the emerging environment. I would like to begin by challenging your thinking a bit with a statement by Bill Gates, the respected (albeit often feared) Chairman of Microsoft. Mr. Gates is observing that advances made in the availability and delivery of information has forever changed the competitive environment for most goods and services. The amount and quality of information available, for the asking, is growing by leaps and bounds. Buyers are more informed than ever before in the {open_quotes}pure{close_quotes} environment. And, as a result buyers are more demanding than ever before, and they will continue to become more so in the future. What does {open_quotes}pure{close_quotes} competition hold for us? Maybe not what you might initially think! In my perception it means that in our future highly educated buyers will ultimately weigh value added factors against price in deciding who to purchase energy from. To be sure, past experience in the telephone industry would suggest that we will experience a price competition phase, but the same experience suggests that products and services will be unbundled to meet very specific customer needs. Competition on the basis of price will be part of the formula, probably a major part of the formula, but not the answer in and of itself.
