A new era of competitive electric service has arrived. The electricity generation business will present increasing competitive challenges. It will still be dominated by strong players with strong balance sheets. And utilities will continue to be a part of the competitive generation business. Electric utilities have been in the generation business for more than a century. This gives them a valuable perspective on the industry, one that will become even more important in these times of rapid change. With that in mind, the author offers a perspective in four areas: reviewing the facts, fumbles, and fictions surrounding the generation of electric power and, finally, his view of the future.
