Responding to utility industry charges of broad regional interference in nuclear power plant operations, Nuclear Regulatory Commission Chairman Ivan Selin has asked the commission`s inspector general to take an independent look at the allegations. The allegations were made by the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations (INPO), an influential industry group formed after the accident at Three Mile Island that is charged with improving performance at the nation`s nuclear plants. According to INPO, NRC officials, particularly regional staff, are intruding into line management responsibilities at many US nuclear plants. While not questioning NRC`s authority to regulate the industry, and to pressure utilities when their plants` performance is substandard, INPO stressed that the commission must leave it up to each utility to figure out how to improve that performance. The implication is that continued interference by the NRC could compromise safety at the nation`s nuclear power plants.
