Development of nuclear technology depends greatly on solving the problem of safe containment, storage and final disposal of nuclear spent fuel. The absence of plants reprocessing spent fuel in Ukraine has raised the problem of developing highly reliable and safe methods for final deep geological disposal of unreprocessed nuclear fuel. To meet this requirement in the course of the canister encapsulation method for spent fuel after the storage period about 10 years to obtain a lower level of activity, the authors propose to use direct containment of spent nuclear fuel rods in monolithic additional protective container, placed inside the metal canister. The paper describes the technological operations of implementing the proposed variant of preparing the spent fuel for further disposal. The results of laboratory-scale researches on manufacturing simulators of protective container material with use of natural bentonite are given.
