  1. Swedish Nuclear Fuel and Waste Management Co., Stockholm (Sweden)

For some years the necessary facilities have been in operation in Sweden for the safe transport and storage for long periods of time of radioactive waste and spent fuel from nuclear power production. These include a final repository, SFR, for short-lived low- and intermediate level waste, a central interim storage facility, CLAB, for spent fuel and a sea-based transport system. The experiences from the operation of these facilities have generally been very good. The next step is the development of an encapsulation facility and a deep repository for the spent nuclear fuel. This work has recently gone from the R and D phase to the demonstration phase with plans for a repository to be in operation at the end of the next decade.
