The zinc sulfide/gallium phosphide system was chosen as a model for studying nano composite synthesis and processing. Nano composites were synthesized by a novel impregnation method. Zinc sulfide was synthesized by homogeneous precipitation from aqueous solutions whereas gallium phosphide from organometallic routes. Nano-porous ZnS particles were impregnated with phosphinogallane liquid precursor followed by flash pyrolysis to precipitate GaP in the pore network. Composite powders were characterized with respect to chemistry and structure. Compacts were hot isostatically pressed to dense parts. Compacts maintained nanocrystallinity even after. HIPping at 9000{degrees}C exhibiting crystallite size less than 85 nm. Nano composites exhibited hardness values that were double that of ZnS.
