La2IrCd crystallizes in the orthorhombic Immm space group. The structure is one-dimensional and consists of two La2IrCd ribbons oriented in the (1, 0, 0) direction. La is bonded in a linear geometry to one Ir and one Cd atom. The La–Ir bond length is 2.43 Å. The La–Cd bond length is 3.30 Å. Ir is bonded in a linear geometry to two equivalent La atoms. Cd is bonded in a linear geometry to two equivalent La atoms.
