Determination of the half-life of the spontaneous fission of {sup 240}Pu

Two metallic {sub 240}Pu sources were certified as reference standards of spontaneous-fission activity and neutron flux. The certification results were used to determine the ratio T{sub {alpha}}/T{sub sf} of the alpha-decay and spontaneous-fission half-lives of {sup 240}Pu. The ratio was found to be (5.68 {+-} 0.11){center_dot}10{sup -8}, which corresponds to T{sub sf} = (1.16 {+-} 0.02){center_dot}1011 yr for an assumed value T{sub {alpha}} = 6563 {+-} 7 yr.
