The distribution of mass in the spontaneous fission of Pu/sup 240/ was investigated radiochemically by measuring the fission yields of fifteen isotopes in the mass range 89 to 147. Comparisons are made with other published work on spontaneous flssion to reveal trends in the yield-mass relationship with increasing mass of the fissioning nucleus. Since neutron-induced fission of Pu/ sup 239/ is essentially fission of Pu/sup 240/ in excitation levels above the ground state, a further series of changes in the yield-mass function for fission in various states of excitation of the same nucleus is also presented.
