The application of coatings, a primary processing step in film preparation, allows one to produce films with the required cation stoichiometry. Although different methods for depositing superconducting films and coatings imply various mechanisms of mass transfer, the microstructure and properties of the films are largely controlled by deposition parameters, such as the energy of the deposited species, the presence and state of electrons and other reactive particles near the substrate, and substrate temperature. By varying these parameters, one can control the composition, crystal structure, and microstructure of the films and, hence, their properties over wide ranges. In this paper the authors investigated Y-Ba-Cu-O films electrophoretically applied on stainless-steel, Ag, Al, Cu, GaAs, and Si substrates. Their composition was studied using X-ray phase analysis and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy; in addition, the authors measured the critical temperature T{sub c} and critical-current density j{sub c} of the superconducting transition.
