Spin polarization and weak decays of hypernuclei
- Department of Physics, Osaka University, Toyonaka, Osaka 560 (Japan)
Spin-polarized {Lambda}-hypernuclei in wide excitation-energy ({ital E}{sub {ital x}}) and angular-momentum ({ital J}{h_bar}) ranges are produced by direct and multistep-compound ({pi},{ital K}{sup +}) and ({ital K}{sup {minus}},{pi}) reactions with GeV/c {pi} and K beams. The intrinsic spin of {Lambda} in the polarized {Lambda}-hypernucleus is well polarized. The compound hypernuclei produced by ({pi}{sup +},{ital K}{sup +}) reactions decay by emitting particles (x) and {gamma}-rays, finally populating bound {Lambda}-hypernuclei. These ({pi}, {ital K}{sup +}x{gamma}) reactions are useful for producing various kinds of spin-polarized {Lambda}-hypernuclei. Non-mesonic weak decays from polarized {Lambda}-hypernuclei show a large asymmetry with respect to the polarization axis. It suggests contributions of heavy mesons (quarks) in the weak process associated with the strangeness change. Polarized hypernuclei are used for studying electroweak and strong interactions of hyperons in the nuclear medium.
