A well-known procedure for the preparation of ZrTiO{sub 4} and its solid solutions involves sintering of the metal oxides at about 1400{degrees}C. Sintering at 1600{degrees}C was reported to yield pure orthorhombic zirconium titanate with the unit-cell parameters a = 0.4800, b=0.5008, and c = 0.5451 nm. Zirconium titanate was also prepared by precipitation from salt solutions. It was established that at 650{degrees}C ZrTiO{sub 4}-based solid solutions are formed in the range from 50 to 70 mol% TiO{sub 2}. Presumably, ZrTiO{sub 4} can be formed over a wide temperature range by choosing the appropriate state and structure of the starting components. The aim of this work was to study the formation of ZrTiO{sub 4} in fibers containing titania and zirconia.
