Small-scale equipment that offers the advantages of automated surface preparation equipment for short segment repair projects has proven effective in field operations. Air abrasive blasting currently is the only practical method of surface preparation for short segments of pipe line exposed during repair or rehabilitation projects. To meet the needs of the bellhole type projects, CRC-Evans Rehabilitation Systems has developed smaller equipment that provides advantages of automated surface preparation, while using conventional blast support equipment. Equipment production rate tests have demonstrated a significant improvement in production over manual methods. An important factor affecting surface preparation production rates is pipe condition before blasting. A compact system has been developed to remove existing coating and water-soluble contaminants with high-pressure water jets. The system, Bellhole HydroKleaner{trademark}, leaves the pipe clean and ready for surface preparation.
