Title: Production of doubly charmed baryons at energy {radical}s=10.58 GeV

Abstract

The cross section for the production of doubly charmed baryons at a B-factory is estimated on the basis of perturbative QCD calculations of the cross sections for cc-diquark production and of the quark-hadron duality. 14 refs., 2 figs.

  • We search for the charmed pentaquark candidate reported by the H1 collaboration, the {theta}{sub c}(3100){sup 0}, in e{sup +}e{sup -} interactions at a center-of-mass (c.m.) energy of 10.58 GeV, using 124 fb{sup -1} of data recorded with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II e{sup +}e{sup -} facility at SLAC. We find no evidence for such a state in the same pD*{sup -} decay mode reported by H1, and we set limits on its production cross section times branching fraction into pD*{sup -} as a function of c.m. momentum. The corresponding limit on its total rate per e{sup +}e{sup -}{yields}qq event, more » times branching fraction, is about 3 orders of magnitude lower than rates measured for the charmed {lambda}{sub c} and {sigma}{sub c} baryons in such events.« less
  • We search for strange-pentaquark states that have been previously reported by other experiments--the {theta}(1540){sup +}, {xi}{sub 5}(1860){sup --}, and {xi}{sub 5}(1860){sup 0}--in 123 fb{sup -1} of data recorded with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II e{sup +}e{sup -} storage ring. We find no evidence for these states and set 95% confidence level upper limits on the number of {theta}(1540){sup +} and {xi}{sub 5}(1860){sup --} pentaquarks produced per e{sup +}e{sup -} annihilation into qq and per {upsilon}(4S) decay. For qq events the {theta}(1540){sup +} [{xi}{sub 5}(1860){sup --}] limit is about 8 [4] times lower than the rates measured for ordinary baryonsmore » of similar mass.« less
  • The calculational precision of e{sup +}e{sup -}{yields}{tau}{sup +}{tau}{sup -} and e{sup +}e{sup -}{yields}{mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup -} production cross sections in electron-positron annihilations at {radical}(s)=10.58 GeV is studied for the KKMC Monte Carlo simulation program, modified to include contributions from recent implementation of the hadronic part of vacuum polarization. We determine {sigma}(e{sup +}e{sup -}{yields}{tau}{sup +}{tau}{sup -})=(0.919{+-}0.003) nb and {sigma}(e{sup +}e{sup -}{yields}{mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup -})=(1.147{+-}0.005) nb, where the error represents the precision of the calculation.
  • The Collins effect connects transverse quark spin with a measurable azimuthal asymmetry in the yield of hadronic fragments around the quark's momentum vector. Using two different reconstruction methods we measure statistically significant azimuthal asymmetries for charged pion pairs in e{sup +}e{sup -} annihilation at center-of-mass energies of 10.52 GeV and 10.58 GeV, which can be attributed to the fragmentation of primordial quarks with transverse spin components. The measurement was performed using a data set of 547 fb{sup -1} collected by the Belle detector at KEKB improving the statistics of the previously published results by nearly a factor of 20.
  • The inclusive cross sections for dihadrons of charged pions and kaons (e +e - → hhX) in electronpositron annihilation are reported. They are obtained as a function of the total fractional energy and invariant mass for any di-hadron combination in the same hemisphere as defined by the thrust event-shape variable and its axis. Since same-hemisphere dihadrons can be assumed to originate predominantly from the same initial parton, di-hadron fragmentation functions are probed. These di-hadron fragmentationfunctions are needed as an unpolarized baseline in order to quantitatively understand related spindependent measurements in other processes and to apply them to the extraction ofmore » quark transversity distribution functions in the nucleon. The di-hadron cross sections are obtained from a 655 fb -1 data sample collected at or near the Y(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e +e - collider.« less
