The oxidation of tert-butyl alcohol, reduction of IK-9-4 catalyst by the alcohol, and oxidation of the catalyst by air were studied in a pulsed reactor at 573-633 K with the tert-butyl alcohol concentration varying in pulses of 0.5-0.7 vol. %. During the reduction of the catalyst by the tert-butyl alcohol stable adsorption of the alcohol was detected; upon contact with the air the alcohol gives only products of deep oxidation, while upon contact with the reaction mixture it gives methacrolein to a greater degree. It was determined that the mechanism of conversion of tert-butyl alcohol to methacrolein is a redox mechanism. 6 refs., 4 figs., 3 tabs.
