The Polarization and Magnetic Moment of the Cascading Minus Hyperon
- Rutgers U., Piscataway
The magnetic moment of the $$\Xi^-$$ hyperon has been measured to be -0.716 + 0.040 nuclear magnetons by observing the precession of the $$\Xi^-$$polarization vector in a magnetic field. The $$\Xi^-$$'s were produced by 400 GeV protons at angles of $$\pm$$ 5 and $$\pm$$ 7.5 mr, and had momenta between 105 and 290 GeV/c. The charged particles from the $$\Xi^- \to \Lambda \pi^-$$ and $$\Lambda \to p \pi^-$$ decays were detected in a multiwire proportional chamber spectrometer. Results are based on 192,110 events. measured $$\Xi$$ polarization is presented as a function of momentum. The average polarization was -0.093 + 0.007. helicity of the decay $$\Lambda$$'s was also measured, giving value of $$\alpha _{\Lambda}\alpha \Xi$$ = -0.303 $$\pm$$ 0.004 $$\pm$$ 0.004.
