Elevated alpha activity was measured in a groundwater monitoring well that is hydrogically down gradient from a series of burial trenches containing transuranic-bearing wastes. This alpha activity has been identified as Cm-244 and 5.53 Bq/L for Am-241. These two radionuclides account for all the gross alpha activity found in this well. The Cm-244, Am-241, and gross alpha activities correlate well over time and with the water level in the well. This suggests that the Cm-244 and Am-241 concentrations in the well are partially controlled by the elevation of the water table in relation to the bottom of the burial trenches. The aqueous geochemistry of curium and americium will be discussed in relation to the groundwater chemistry at the burial site.
