An ion exchange membrane based on poly(dimethylphenylene oxide phosphonic acid) was attempted in the application of a high temperature polymer electrolyte for the PEM Fuel Cell. The fundamental parameters of the polymer electrolyte were analyzed. In particular, the thermal stability of the membrane was evaluated at temperatures over 100{degrees}C. The phosphonated polymer membranes show better stability than those based on sulfonic acid. The results suggest the potential application of phosphonated polymers as high temperature electrolytes for PEM Fuel Cell.
