The chemical and electrochemical processes that result in disbonding of coatings from steel pipelines under cathodic protection are discussed. Bare and fusion bonded epoxy (FBE) coated steel surfaces were studied in aqueous alkaline media using voltammetry and in situ and ex situ Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopic techniques. A thrust of the work is to determine the role of reaction products from cathodic polarization on the disbonding process.
