A novel method has been developed for the synthesis of poly(arylene ether ether sulfides). Amorphous poly(arylene ether ether sulfoxides) serve as amorphous precursors for these semi-crystalline poly(arylene ether ether sulfides). The sulfoxide polymers have been prepared using conventional aromatic nucleophilic substitution reactions between difluorodiphenyl sulfoxide and diphenols. It has been demonstrated that controlled molecular weight sulfoxide polymers can be made using a suitable non-reactive endcapping reagent. Rapid reduction of the sulfoxide polymers in a suitable solvent with oxalyl chloride and tetrabutylammonium iodide yielded micron size particles of poly(arylene ether ether sulfides). Quantitative conversion and retension of molecular weight upon reduction has also been demonstrated. Synthesis and structural and thermal characterization of this new class of materials will be discussed.
