Sol-gel processing of titania is most simply carried out by hydrolysis and condensation polymerization of alkoxides Ti(OR){sub 4}. The course of the polymerization reaction is determined on a molecular level by the structure and reactivity of the intermediate species [Ti{sub x}O{sub y}](OR){sub (4x{minus}2y)} formed as Ti(OR){sub 4} is converted to TiO{sub 2}. A number of these species have been isolated: [Ti{sub 3}O](OR){sub 10}, [Ti{sub 7}O{sub 4}](OR){sub 20}, [Ti{sub 10}O{sub 8}](OR){sub 24},[Ti{sub 16}O{sub 16}](OR){sub 32}, [Ti{sub 11}O{sub 13}](OR){sub 18}, {alpha}-[Ti{sub 12}O{sub 16}](OR){sub 16}, and {alpha}2-[Ti{sub 12}O{sub 16}](OR){sub 16}. The chemical properties of these species have been studied in detail in an effort to understand how sol-gel polymerization conditions affect the nature of the titania product ultimately obtained.
